Cynthia Laid to Rest
February 2025

Cynthia, after over 20 years with us here on our property, has been laid to rest in a place accessible to all in eternity.

As much as we would have liked to keep her with us, looking into the future, we know with the increasing fires and other climate & health impacts, that this land will not be in our hands permanently; and we don't want her ashes to be left to the whims of strangers. For that reason we have chosen our own favorite place for Cynthia to rest.

In her instructions, she asked that she stay with us, but barring that, be laid to rest in the ocean where she could be free as the waves.
In her words:

-- Take me to the ocean and ultimately set me free, for nothing soothed me more, or put it all in perspective better, than the waves of the ocean...

Where she was placed, in a glorious sea arch few know about, is a public place, accessible to all, in one of the most beautiful sections of the California coast. True, it is desolate, but that is something she would appreciate, as she would if those who loved her, visited.

It is a place Candice and I visit regularly to pare ourselves of the day-to-day burdens; and as Cynthia alluded to, it is the strength and sound of the waves that have that power. We will visit her often, and hope that her friends and family may also visit should they pass this way..

Most importantly, may she be at peace.

[ Cynthia was laid to rest under the arch visible (the opening is about 20 feet high) ]

Should you wish to visit:

California Highway 1, Mendocino coast, ~3 miles before it turns inland (before the lost coast), there is the Westport Beach Vista Point (unmarked, but is on Google Maps). The arches (there are 3) can be seen below the handicap parking space (stay back from the cliff edges!!!).

Should you wish to go down to the arch (only at minus tides!!!), enter the Westport-Union Landing campground just south and drive down to the day use parking just before Howard Creek bridge. Follow the trail past the bathrooms and down to Howard Creek, cross it, then go to the beach and cross it again heading north. It is approximately a mile walk north.

Close your eyes and look at me
I'll be standing by your side
In between the deep blue sea
And the sheltering sky
If we find no words to say
To the rhythm of the waves
Then we'll both surrender there
