TECHNICIAN ALLAN OF SWANZEY GETS BRONZE STAR

Before the war Technician Fourth Grade Lloyd A. Allan, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Allan, Swanzey, worked for his father as a crane operator, and recently his wife, who lives at 17 North Street, received the Bronze Star Medal, which was awarded her husband for the operation of a crane in a cool and fearless manner during bridging operations across the Rhine river.
The Keene soldier has been in the service for two and a half years, serving 13 months overseas.
Below is the citation received by Mrs. Allan:
"Technician Fourth Grade Lloyd A. Allan, 31177363, Corps of Engineers, 994th Engineer Treadway Bridge Company, USA, distinguished himself by heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States at Kripp, Germany, from March 10, 1945, to March 14, 1945. Technician Fourth Grade Allan, a crane operator, displaying unusual devotion to duty and tenacity of purpose, operated his crane in a cool and fearless manner while in an exposed position during vital bridging operations across the Rhine river. Although the bridge site was subjected to bombing and strafing by enemy planes and intense observed enemy artillery shelling, he continued his hazardous task until the bridge was completed. Technician Fourth Grade Allan's skill and daring reflect credit on him and the armed forces of the United States."[Broderbund Family Archive #110, Vol. 1 A-L, Ed. 5, Social Security Death Index: U.S., Date of Import: Jun 6, 1998, Internal Ref. #1.111.5.4957.112]

Individual Note:
Uncle Lloyd and Aunt Stella were great people, they were loving and kind to me as a child. They were unable to have children of their own, which was heartbreaking, as they would have made wonderful parents. Aunt Stella taught me how to make great scrambled eggs when my Dad (George) and I visited them in 1969, in Keene, NH

Individual Note:
Fred Justin Wainwright, or "Uncle Fred" as my mother (Arlene Wainwright/Allan) used to call him, was the Uncle of Arlene's father, Harry Leonard Wainwright. Fred was a young uncle, being only 8 years older than his nephew, my Mom's father. Mom often spoke of Uncle Fred with great respect, warmth and love. Mom told me that Uncle Fred was very proud of having been part of a group of men, called the "White Mountain Boys." So far, I've been unable to locate any information about this group.

Actually, she passed away in Nebraska in a rest home. Her daughter, Mary Volenec lived in Bullhead City, Az and probably used her address in AZ for Social Security.[Broderbund Family Archive #110, Vol. 1 A-L, Ed. 5, Social Security Death Index: U.S., Date of Import: Jul 23, 1998, Internal Ref. #1.111.5.132794.182]

Mary Bernheart came over to the US on a ship with her two small children, Louis (2) and Mary (1). Mary tells a story of how her mother became ill on the ship, and other women watched the children. During a time of illness, little Mary, only 1 year, wandered off, and nearly fell into the ocean. Ships in those days did not have railings.
Nicolas Kolosseus had been in the US for a year when Mary and the children came over, he was staying with his brother, Anthony in Omaha, NE. Mary and the children went directly from the ship to Omaha and the family stayed with Anthony for about a year before finding their own place.
Kolosseus is a Hungarian name....Mary was of German decent and spoke German..Nicolas Kolosseus spoke Hungarian, but apparently they understood each other.

Louis was not actually born in New Hampshire, we don't know how this error was made, possibly the
"NH" and the "NE" were mixed up. Louis died 6 days after his Mother, Mary Bernheart.
Louis and his wife (?) had one boy, name unknown. They owned a chicken farm in Louisana. Louis was a Chief Pharmacist Mate in the Navy and a Coreman in the Navy during WW2. He retired from the Navy.
