His parents & grandparents moved from Mahonay Twp., Northumberland Co., PA, to Perry Co., OH, about the year 1802 & 1804. For two generations at least, all his ancestors were members of the Lutheran Church of which faith he also was a faithful warrant throughout life.
While a young man, Samuel worked at the carpenter trade but after his marriage, he purchased half the Poorman homestead & devoted the remainder of his life to farming in Hopewell Twp., Perry Co., OH. They being quiet & industrous Christian citizens, also taught their children the nobility of labor. Nor was their training one-sided. for their effort was to cultivate the head & heart as well as the hand. Regarding their children as a gift of God, they early dedicated them to Him in Holy baptism & earnestly set to work to bring them up in the nurture admonition of the Lord. Their efforts were crowned with success; they were prosperous in business & had the pleasure of seeing all their children & grandchildren of proper age, faithful adherants of the church of their fathers.
