On January 6, 1891, he was appointed Missonary Bishop to Japan by the House of Bishops, which was a highly honored position. Rev. Swentzel did not accept the position tendered to him, not by any reason of unwillingness to assume the duties & responsibilities of the See of Veede, but because of conditions that arose unforeseen. In March 1891, he also had a call from the Holy Trintiy Church at West Center, PA., but found it impossible to leave the parish, where he had done noble work. He also declined the call to remain at Scranton, PA.
