Jacob served his country 3 years as a Private in the late war. After the rebellion was over, he went to the territories where he was employed on a ranch. He has not been heard from since 1885.

At one time, he came near being captured by the Indians. His companion was taken but he rode for his life on a mule he unhitched from the wagon they had provisions in. His comrade's horse stumbled & fell with him under it, he saw that they were losing time, so he said, "Ziegler, leave me & save yourself." That was the last he ever saw of his comrade. Having made but other narrow escapes from the Indians, it can be supposed that he had the misfortune of falling into their hands at last & is no more among the living.
