They lived for a few years in Chambersburg, PA., then moved to Omaha, NB, but returned from there in 1882. They then were residents of Harrisburg, PA. He learned the trade of coach making & is one of the best mechanics in the state.

Having been teachers in the State Solders' Orphans Schools of PA., they continued in the same work after their marriage. Going to Chester Springs in May 1880, they remained there until he was elected principal of the school at McAllisterville, PA. After 2 years of failing health compelled Columbus to change his course, they went to Chambersburg & engaged in mercantile for 6 years.

A desier to serve the Master more fully lead them into the "orphanage" labor again, & in October 1889, they took charge as superintendents of the Children's Industrial Home of Harrisburg, PA., where bids fairs to become one of the leading charities of the state. In connection with their labor of love, Columbus engaged as a crayon artist & executs many fine pieces in his studio. theresa spent all her leisure time in literary work. Her articles have been extensively copied not only in the U.S. but in many publications of Canada.

Emma had been teaching school in the Chicago School House, Franklin Co., PA. In 1886, she went to KS & taught school there until 1890 when she married Charles F. Custer. He went to KS in 1886 where he engaged in farming.

They resided in Franklin Co., PA., until the year 1870 when they moved near Abilene, KS. They bought 160 acres of land; since then, he has added 160 acres & prosperity has crowned their labor & toil. They were faithful adherents of Lutheranism & make the church next to their home in their hearts.

Bill in early boyhood gave evidence of mechanical skill. He was sent to the Frick Shops at Waynesboro, PA, where he served a term as machinist & engineer. He went from there to the PA Railroad Shops at Altoona, PA. Returned to the Frick Shops & took a position of master mechanic in 1873. He became a member of the firm of Frick Co. & is one of the directors today.
