Military in Civil War as a private of Captain Martin Barrenger's Company K, 5th regiment of the Ohio Infantry.

Sharon Diethrich found record of Edward Corcilius in Pension Records.
Edward Lewis enlisted in the Civil war. He was living in Kentucky at the time, but enlisted in the Union army at Cincinnati, OH July 29, 1864. He served as a private of Captain Martin Barrenger's Company K, 5th regiment of the Ohio Infantry, and was discharged on the 26th of July 1865, and returned to his home in Newport, KY.
According to the deposition of Caroline Fahlsing, sister to our great grandmother Rosena Niemeyer Corcilius, witnessed and notarized in Richmond, Wayne, Indiana, "Edward was entirely changed, sick and unable to work and so, support his large family, hand has lost his reason."
Edward Lewis died October 12, 1882 from exposure. He wandered away from his home in Brisbin, PA and was found dead in the Allegheny Mountains, Clearfield, PA.
Great Grandmother Rosena filed for pension assistance May 31, 1887 from Central City, NE. She had to prove her marriage to Edward Lewis through testimonies, because her marriage certificate was burned May 2, 1884 along with all her household effects. Her final pension payment of $8.00 was on July 4, 1899 due to her death July 24, 1899. she lived to the age of 66 years, 8 months and 24 days.

Rosena immigrated to the USA about 1875 when she was seven years of age. Census records show that she came from Hanover, Germany. Possibly this is a district, not a city. At the port of entry in NY, she became separated from her family (two brothers, a sister and father). She lived with strangers for a period of 7 years until her family, who had moved on to CA could be located through advertisements in the paper. When she was reunited with her brothers and sister, she learned her father had been killed in the Mexican War.
Sometime during the next five years she moved to Louisville, KY, where she was married to Edward Lewis, also of Hanover, Germany, on June 22, 1852, by Rev. Schenck at the St. Paul's German Protestant church. The name of the church was changed to St. Paul's Evangelical United Church of Christ at a later date.

In the pension records for Edward Lewis Corcilius, Rosena's sister Caroline (Niemeyer) Fahlsing, living at the time in Richmond, Wayne, Indiana, testified on behalf of Rosena that she was the widow of Edward, all records having been burned in a house fire.

Rosena's obituary in the Central City, Nebraska paper: "Mrs. Rosena Corcilius passed away on the 24th day at 9:30 PM at the advanced age of 66 years, 8 mo. and 24 da. She was born at Hanover, Germany and came to America at seven years of age. Being lost from her parents in New York City when landing she was with strangers for seven long years and at the age of 14 years, through advertising in the papers, she found the where abouts of her two brothers and one sister who were in California, her father having been killed in the Mexican War and her mother dying before the family left Germany. She was married in Louisville, Kentucky and was the mother of ten children of which number six are still living. She has been a dearly beloved mother, one who has been able for 16 years after the death of husband and father, to keep her children who are all grown to manhood and womanhood, close about her. She is the last one of her father's family all the rest having gone before. She was a member of the Lutheran church all through life and with God's help made it a life's duty to teach her children to fear the Lord and keep His Commandments. She leaves behind to mourn her loss, four sons, two daughters, one son-in-law, two daughters-in-law and eight grandchildren who, one and all bow in humble submission to the will of our Heavenly Father and ask Him to bring peace to our souls."
