Wilhelm was a soldier with the Nassau infantry regiment in Spain for three years and then fought under the Dutch flag against Napoleon Bonaparte at Waterloo. He was wounded in this battle. He therefore received a pension from the Dutch government until the end of his life.

The explanation for the two Dietrich's birthplaces in Poland is that Hermann was transferred and worked as a lawyer in Poland during the German occupation of Poland in the World War II. I don't think he was involved in Nazi crimes there because he was working in the civilian sector. He wasn't a Nazi either. In some of his letters to his wife, he predicted the German defeat, which at the time was a form of defeatism and subversion of military power. Fortunately, the Gestapo did not investigate these letters. That's what happened in Germany at the time. No one should feel safe in the Fuhrer's state.
